Where Tahrs Live

Who Stole The Moon? - free (paper) book giveaway {28 Mars 2014}

[UPDATE - all books have been sent out and this post is now for history only.]

Book photo

Some time ago, when I was young and naive, I self-published a book with my illustrations, "Who Stole The Moon?". It sold steadily... for some time. Then I realized what most people in similar situation do - to keep sales going, you need to stop drawing/working/whatever you're doing and start marketing. I was always awful at marketing, so sales basically stopped by now. And because I am now full-time employed, I have no enegry left to spend on pushing the sales.

However, I have an idea what I should do about the remaining books. A couple of times, I sent batches of books to my friends from charity fund helping children with Epidermolysis bullosa - (I'm glad I have a chance to promote them here!) Instead of gathering dust in my mother's apartment, I'd rather see these books in children's hands.

So here is the deal. If you participate in something related to children aged 2-6 (kindergarten, charity fund, health care center, hospital, etc) and are interested, I will send you "Who Stole The Moon?" for free.

The photos are below. For more information, please email to (do NOT contact me using comments on this page). Thanks! - what's (not) going on {18 Février 2014}

If you've visited my website before, you might have noticed I have not updated it for a while. I have been receiving emails saying "Where are new wallpapers?", "We miss you!" - and I truly appreciate them. Silence is proved means of defence for me. However, allow me to write a little bit, just in case you're interested.

Some time ago, I used to combine doing outsource design and development with drawing wallpapers. It worked well, sometimes challenging, but manageable. I had steady flow of jobs, and enough time to draw a wallpaper every week or two.

Then, three things happened. - still alive {7 Juillet 2013}

"Almost two months without a new wallpaper, what about a 'full-time self-employment, creating wallpapers'???" (Comment from a Vladstudio visitor).

Allow me to shed light on why I have been silent. There is nothing exciting - I have been occupied by two side projects (both taking time but not making any money), plus traveling, plus my kid not being well (all is well now, fortunately). I have plenty of ideas for new wallpapers in my head - just completely out of time and energy to actually draw them. Now, I must say I am lucky man - even with no updates, my humble website remains my (only) source of stable income! I am really looking forward to dedicating myself to again. Hopefully soon!

Think outside Photoshop - new image editing concept {12 Mars 2013}

Russian translation and discussion:

I love Adobe Photoshop. I really do! I have been using it daily for about 10 years. One cannot over-estimate its influence on the world of image editing - which, in many ways, defines how the world around us looks! I'm sure that right now, in your room, there is at least one thing partly designed in Photoshop. All the images in this article were prepared in Photoshop!

In its market, Photoshop is King. You can also call it "standard" (which is mostly good) or "monopoly" (which is mostly bad). But the fact remains - if you work with image editing, you must think in Photoshop's terms and follow its workflows.

Photoshop is not the most complex piece of software (because, let's be fair, digial imaging is not the most complex thing of all). However, it is quite complex, for several reasons. First, it can really do many things. But also, because it is very old, almost as old as I am! This long history of development means Photoshop did not have a chance to re-think any of its core ideas and start some things from scratch. You know, compatibility; and besides, why fix something that works!

However, recently an idea came to me that's been bugging me, asking to be written and published. So I am writing it here without any specific goal or wish - just because I'd love to share and see what you think. Nothing can be better than an interesting discussion! (Hint - comments are welcome!)

vPass 3 - smart web-based generator of secure passwords {28 Février 2013}

vPass screenshot

I upgraded my password generator to version 3. I suspect I am the only one using it :-) but if you're curious why it's good:

vPass takes your master password (f.e. my_password) and, optionally, current domain (f.e. converts into google) and generates 12-letter mix of letters, numbers and symbols (f.e. 0EQu$MwEm?Qt).

Your master password never leaves your device. vPass is 100% client-side, pure Javascript, no data is sent to server. It's just a webpage, so it works on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, webOS, and any future OS too.

Kirby - file-based CMS for simple web sites {28 Février 2013}

Kirby logo

This post is for those who are deciding how to manage their web site(s). Vladstudio is not the only website I am busy with. Until recently, the only options I considered for management was either writing everything from scratch, or using some form of database-driven CMS (WordPress is the most famous).

I was never happy with WordPress - I generally consider it one of the most over-estimated web apps. You can build something large and complex with theme(s) and plugins, but it's ugly from the inside, and supporting it is a nightmare (at least for me). So I was almost always doing all hard coding work myself.

Recently, I stumbled upon a CMS with the fresh concept - Kirby. It's file-based, meaning there is no database, and all your site is simply folders, subfolders and text files!

It looks like an excellent solution when you have skills to develop web template, but other people (who manage content - add news, photos, etc) are not skilled with HTML. Despite being very simple, Kirby is also flexible - add some little tweaks to your template, and you can show photos on website by simply putting the images into a folder!

You can put the website into Dropbox and share it (or just Content folder) with other content managers.

Made with Kirby shows what kinds of websites it's best for.

I even developed couple of little plugins for it: comments and smart submit.

Laravel - a beautiful PHP framework that does not make me feel stupid:
I just finished my first project with Laravel. The project itself was not that simple, but working on it allowed me to gain experience with most of Laravel's components.

I've loved your work for years and even got a royalty free license on one. I happened to be looking through google images at random wallpapers tonight and found this...with no mention of you as the owner. It sickens me when I see people do this and I thought you should know.

Love this wallpaper, had it on my laptop for years. Fun fact is that it is a single frequency that only changes in amplitude :)
