VladVladstudio e proiectul artistului digital rus, Vlad Gerasimov.

Who Stole The Moon? - free (paper) book giveaway {28 Martie 2014}

[UPDATE - all books have been sent out and this post is now for history only.]

Book photo

Some time ago, when I was young and naive, I self-published a book with my illustrations, "Who Stole The Moon?". It sold steadily... for some time. Then I realized what most people in similar situation do - to keep sales going, you need to stop drawing/working/whatever you're doing and start marketing. I was always awful at marketing, so sales basically stopped by now. And because I am now full-time employed, I have no enegry left to spend on pushing the sales.

However, I have an idea what I should do about the remaining books. A couple of times, I sent batches of books to my friends from charity fund helping children with Epidermolysis bullosa - deti-bela.ru (I'm glad I have a chance to promote them here!) Instead of gathering dust in my mother's apartment, I'd rather see these books in children's hands.

So here is the deal. If you participate in something related to children aged 2-6 (kindergarten, charity fund, health care center, hospital, etc) and are interested, I will send you "Who Stole The Moon?" for free.

The photos are below. For more information, please email to vladstudio@gmail.com (do NOT contact me using comments on this page). Thanks!

Vladstudio.com - what's (not) going on {18 Februarie 2014}

If you've visited my website before, you might have noticed I have not updated it for a while. I have been receiving emails saying "Where are new wallpapers?", "We miss you!" - and I truly appreciate them. Silence is proved means of defence for me. However, allow me to write a little bit, just in case you're interested.

Some time ago, I used to combine doing outsource design and development with drawing wallpapers. It worked well, sometimes challenging, but manageable. I had steady flow of jobs, and enough time to draw a wallpaper every week or two.

Then, three things happened.

Vladstudio.com - still alive {7 Iulie 2013}

"Almost two months without a new wallpaper, what about a 'full-time self-employment, creating wallpapers'???" (Comment from a Vladstudio visitor).

Allow me to shed light on why I have been silent. There is nothing exciting - I have been occupied by two side projects (both taking time but not making any money), plus traveling, plus my kid not being well (all is well now, fortunately). I have plenty of ideas for new wallpapers in my head - just completely out of time and energy to actually draw them. Now, I must say I am lucky man - even with no updates, my humble website remains my (only) source of stable income! I am really looking forward to dedicating myself to vladstudio.com again. Hopefully soon!

Think outside Photoshop - new image editing concept {12 Martie 2013}

Russian translation and discussion: Habrahabr.ru

I love Adobe Photoshop. I really do! I have been using it daily for about 10 years. One cannot over-estimate its influence on the world of image editing - which, in many ways, defines how the world around us looks! I'm sure that right now, in your room, there is at least one thing partly designed in Photoshop. All the images in this article were prepared in Photoshop!

In its market, Photoshop is King. You can also call it "standard" (which is mostly good) or "monopoly" (which is mostly bad). But the fact remains - if you work with image editing, you must think in Photoshop's terms and follow its workflows.

Photoshop is not the most complex piece of software (because, let's be fair, digial imaging is not the most complex thing of all). However, it is quite complex, for several reasons. First, it can really do many things. But also, because it is very old, almost as old as I am! This long history of development means Photoshop did not have a chance to re-think any of its core ideas and start some things from scratch. You know, compatibility; and besides, why fix something that works!

However, recently an idea came to me that's been bugging me, asking to be written and published. So I am writing it here without any specific goal or wish - just because I'd love to share and see what you think. Nothing can be better than an interesting discussion! (Hint - comments are welcome!)

vPass 3 - smart web-based generator of secure passwords {28 Februarie 2013}

vPass screenshot

I upgraded my password generator to version 3. I suspect I am the only one using it :-) but if you're curious why it's good:

vPass takes your master password (f.e. my_password) and, optionally, current domain (f.e. http://accounts.google.com converts into google) and generates 12-letter mix of letters, numbers and symbols (f.e. 0EQu$MwEm?Qt).

Your master password never leaves your device. vPass is 100% client-side, pure Javascript, no data is sent to server. It's just a webpage, so it works on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, webOS, and any future OS too.

Kirby - file-based CMS for simple web sites {28 Februarie 2013}

Kirby logo

This post is for those who are deciding how to manage their web site(s). Vladstudio is not the only website I am busy with. Until recently, the only options I considered for management was either writing everything from scratch, or using some form of database-driven CMS (WordPress is the most famous).

I was never happy with WordPress - I generally consider it one of the most over-estimated web apps. You can build something large and complex with theme(s) and plugins, but it's ugly from the inside, and supporting it is a nightmare (at least for me). So I was almost always doing all hard coding work myself.

Recently, I stumbled upon a CMS with the fresh concept - Kirby. It's file-based, meaning there is no database, and all your site is simply folders, subfolders and text files!

It looks like an excellent solution when you have skills to develop web template, but other people (who manage content - add news, photos, etc) are not skilled with HTML. Despite being very simple, Kirby is also flexible - add some little tweaks to your template, and you can show photos on website by simply putting the images into a folder!

You can put the website into Dropbox and share it (or just Content folder) with other content managers.

Made with Kirby shows what kinds of websites it's best for.

I even developed couple of little plugins for it: comments and smart submit.

HI, Thank you for the nice library art. FYI, I am using a crop of this as 'screen saver' for my Nook e-reader. (I cropped the image to get mostly one column, re-sized it to the needed 600 wide by 800 tall, changed to 8-bit 256 grays (as Nook e-ink screen will not show more than that), and lightened a bit) and now have added it to the small collection of screens for my Nook. I did similar with your Google Library image. Both seem perfect for Nook e-Book e-reader device! Thank you. Best.

I agree with all your points above. I started almost the same path as you. Trolling may frameworks reading and trying out. But finally I settled at Yii. I was on the verge of getting serious with Laravel, but the lack of documentation and instability (due to rapid evolving) put me off. I don't mean instability in the form of bug, but the framework is evolving to fast that I am not sure if my code will be working in the next couple of month. Well probably it is more stable with Laravel 4. As for me, I learned and understood MVC concept from codeigniter. They have one of the most simple and best documentation to explain MVC. Because codeigniter is one of the earliest MVC framework around, it exhibits all the core principles in MVC and PHP framework programming in crude way. In my opinion, it is one of the best framework for beginners to start learning about MVC and programming with PHP framework. Many of the newer frameworks masked the code using some code generator hence beginners tend to get lost in the generated code.

Hi, thanks for all the great art. I would like to ask if it is possible for some of your images to be smooth gradients, without the pinstripe lines? Perhaps it is because of my too many years working on computers, but I find that images with lots of fine lines (and screens with light letters on dark background) cause my eyes to sort of water and the image to kind of squiggle. I know, weird... So in most of my computer desktop wallpaper images, I look for smoothness, and with not too many tiny or fine details. I tried using FS ImageViewer to blur this one, which does remove the many fine lines, but introduces too much blur for my taste... Anyway, just a thought for some future images. Grateful for your art, Thank you again.
